Monument
of Brimstone cd 2008 / cd 2009 1: Wearing You Finally there is a new release by Israthoum to enjoy - I admit it: my old band, so not entirely objective here - and it sounds both new and pleasantly familiar. It is good to see that the band still has its own unique recognisable sound, that its still well-inspired and creative, and true to the Satanic side of black metal. Eight tracks of high quality black metal, that combines sharp melodies with solid black metal guitar chords, and the occasional keyboards for atmospheric addition. Like heard on the last cd Black Scenery Avatar, the keys are not placed at the centre as a lead instrument, but hover in the background, doing much more for the music than you might expect. Nice to know is that next to the grim voice of lead singer Israth, there is this guest appearance of Kvohst, the talented singer of <Code> and superhero vocalist on Dødheimsgards Supervillain Outcast. Also appearing as guest guitarist is Martin of Rotterdam based death metal band Abode Of The Blessed and mediteranean clan of Melechesh. Just buy it, and you wont be disappointed! 2010 demo cd 2010 1: The Presence, the
Baying Having been in and around this band for many years, I have a good view on its general development. Despite the excellent track record with solid demo's and albums like The Art of Malice, Black Scenery Avatar, and Monument of Brimstone, the band has had its unfair share of bad luck. Merciless Records disappeared due to financial problems; so after BSA the band promoted itself towards a deal with Spikefarm Records. However, the commercial drive of that label's backing company destroyed Spikefarm, leaving the band yet again without a label. So, here I am with another promo cd. So it's back to core business... With every Israthoum release the keyboards have disappeared little by little, and on this promo we are left with four sharp and aggressive tracks with little to no synths. Imagine a blend of present Dodheimsgard dynamics and early Dodheimsgard atmosphere, and you have an idea what this band is all about now. Even though the production of this release is not the best, it is only a promo. The previous albums has already shown that the band knows how to produce a high quality trademark sound. So if you're running a label that wants to sign a quality band, don't hesitate. REVIEWED JANUARY 2011. |
